Smoking's impact on women's health

June 27, 2019  15:20

For women, smoking is even more dangerous than for men: smoking women under 50 can have a very severe type of heart attack, Journal of the American College of Cardiology reported.

According to experts, smoking causes the greatest harm to the heart between the ages of 18 and 49. Although women are less likely to experience cardiovascular diseases, women who smoke to 50 years of age are at risk for severe heart attack.

Scientists analyzed case histories of patients who experienced acute myocardial infarction with ST-elevation or STEMI with a blockage of one of the main arteries of the heart supplying it with blood and oxygen. They noticed that smokers have a significantly higher risk of suffering from this disorder than male smokers, and compared to non-smokers, women are 13 times higher.

According to scientists, smoking reduces the production of the important hormone estrogen, which is believed to protect the heart of women of reproductive age.
