Suicide attempt saves man from death due to cancer

February 6, 2020  12:54

A 38-year-old Robert Allen from Scotland was hospitalized after an unsuccessful suicide attempt.

It turned out that he had liver cancer in the initial stages. Early diagnosis of the disease saved his life, Daily Mirror reported.

The cancer had caused the tiredness which Robert had attributed to being depressed and overweight.

According to him, "my son would be wanting to do stuff with me and I just didn't have the energy for it. I would see him playing by himself, and I would feel like I was failing my wife too. She had started to think things weren't right, I think she started to think 'he doesn't want to be with us anymore.'

Because of this, on January 20, 2019, he tried to commit suicide, but his 35-year-old wife, Lesley, managed to save him in time. The next day, she took him to the hospital, where doctors noticed that something was wrong with his liver. Robert has been diagnosed with stage 2 liver cancer, and a 6cm tumour has been found.

Doctors performed a successful tumor removal operation on April 8, 2019.

"I feel like getting through the mental illness and cancer was the best thing that ever happened to me. This time last year I was signed off work, two weeks after a suicide attempt. My life has been transformed. I'm much more focused on my family," he said.
