There is a definite link between smoking and suicidal behavior, according to a new study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

According to co-author of the study, smoking increases the risk of suicide by 2.5 times. However, if a person gives up smoking, this rate goes down. So, the likelihood of suicidal thoughts in smokers is 1.84 times higher, in those who quit smoking - 1.35 times.

According to Medportal.ru, observations conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic showed that women who smoke have a higher risk of suicide than men who smoke. However, there are more unsuccessful attempts on the account of men.

One of the possible biological explanations for the link between tobacco and suicide, according to scientists, may be the effect of nicotine on the central nervous system. It lowers serotonin levels in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that is involved in the formation of emotions.
