Physical activity improves brain function in middle-aged and elderly people. Scientists have learned to track these improvements remotely.
According to Medportal.ru, the beneficial effects of physical activity on cognitive function have been known for quite some time. Now scientists wanted to find out whether it is possible to prove the link between physical activity and maintaining brain function with the help of mobile technology, designed to help people in the era of pandemics.
A new study conducted by scientists at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine proved the effectiveness of using portable technology to reveal the link between physical activity and brain function.
The study showed that on days when physical activity increased, participants between the ages of 50 and 74 were more effective at performing tasks, and on days when their physical activity decreased, their cognitive performance improved as well. A dynamic process was observed: the alternation of physical activity and rest.
The correlation between physical activity and improved brain function persisted when the scientists adjusted the calculations for the various diseases of the participants.
According to the scientists, the smartphone cognitive tests, which participants take twice a day, may be a sensitive tool for tracking changes in cognitive function associated with different physical activities.
