Two drinks that can be dangerous for kidneys

Coffee and tea can negatively affect kidney health. This is stated in a new study by the CIBEROBN group led by Jordi Salas and Andres Diaz from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) in the PREDIMED-Plus project.

According to Gazeta.ru, the study found a link between consumption of coffee, tea and changes in glomerular filtration rate. This indicator is considered a marker of kidney health. Scientists studied the history and habits of 5,851 overweight or obese elderly people.

Coffee seed is high in polyphenols (with antioxidant properties), caffeine, vitamins, minerals and bioactive phytochemicals with potential health benefits. But research on the effects of coffee and tea on kidney function has always been controversial.

The authors of a new study found that consumption of coffee and tea was associated with decreased glomerular filtration rate at 1-year follow-up.

Researchers observed that people who drank more than 2 cups of coffee per day (50 ml of caffeine per cup) had worse glomerular filtration rates than those who drank coffee occasionally (less than 1 cup per day) or those who did not drink it. Researchers concluded that drinking more than 2 cups of coffee a day was associated with a 19% increased risk of rapid loss of kidney function. Similarly, tea containing caffeine can also be harmful to the kidneys.
