How does coronavirus affect brain?

March 21, 2022  18:43

The spike protein that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus uses to enter human cells can have the same effect on immune cells in the brain as it does on the rest of the body, scientists from the University of Huddersfield say.

According to the study, the results of which were published in the journal Molecular Neurobiology, although the coronavirus is unable to multiply in the brain, it can cause some disorders, such as memory loss and blurred consciousness, due to the immune response.

Now scientists want to find out if the coronavirus infection is capable of affecting the brain, whether it could provoke certain neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, in the future.
