Smartwatch can detect heart failure

November 17, 2022  19:27

Smartwatches with ECG function can detect heart failure, American scientists have found.  The results of a study by scientists from the Mayo Clinic were published in the journal Nature Medicine.

Researchers applied artificial intelligence to Apple Watch ECG recordings to identify patients with left ventricular dysfunction.

Two and a half thousand patients from 11 countries participated in the study. Between August 2021 and February 2022, participants submitted more than 125,000 ECG recordings.

420 participants also underwent cardiac ultrasound. Of these, 16 patients were found to have a low ejection fraction. In the end, the accuracy rate of the watch was the same or even higher than that of the treadmill diagnostic test.

The scientists' data showed that digital devices allow convenient and inexpensive screening of important conditions. People with ventricular dysfunction may have no symptoms, but this common form of heart disease affects about 2% of the population and 9% of people over age 60.
