Chinese Woman Gives Birth to Quintuplets

A 24-year-old woman from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China successfully gave birth to quintuplets — one boy and four girls — at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. According to the newspaper People's Daily, the probability of naturally conceiving quintuplets is approximately 1 in 60 million cases.

“This is the highest number of babies from a multiple pregnancy I have ever delivered,” said Li Jiafu, chief physician of the hospital’s obstetrics department, who has nearly 40 years of professional experience.

The babies were born at 28 weeks of pregnancy. The boy was delivered first, weighing 990 grams, followed by his younger sisters weighing 1,020 g, 970 g, 1,030 g, and 870 g. The newborns received satisfactory Apgar scores (6 out of 10), which assess a baby’s condition in the first minutes of life. A score of 7 is considered good.

The quintuplets are currently under medical supervision in the neonatal department, and their vital signs are reported to be stable.
