Men's average testosterone levels have fallen by nearly half over the past 50 years, according to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), as reported by The Guardian.
Data presented at the society's annual meeting in London showed that total testosterone levels in men declined by 54% between 1972 and 2019. The findings are based on a study involving approximately 118,000 men from Israel, the United States, Brazil, Finland, and Denmark.
Israeli professor Hagai Levine said the observed decline of more than 1% per year in total testosterone levels is unlikely to be the result of chance or a statistical error.
According to the researchers, the rate of decline appears to have accelerated since 2000. They suggest that exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in a wide range of everyday consumer products, as well as the effects of global warming, may be contributing factors.
The researchers also noted an important limitation of the analysis: obesity, which is known to be associated with testosterone levels, was not taken into account in the study.
