Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) have developed a new injectable hydrogel that can accelerate the healing of complex wounds without the use of antibiotics. The findings were published in the journal ACS Applied Bio Materials.
The new material is based on a specialized metal-phenolic network, which combines metal ions with naturally occurring plant-derived compounds. The researchers created the first nanocomplex based on cerium and rutin, offering multiple therapeutic benefits.
Cerium helps neutralize excess reactive oxygen species (ROS)—highly reactive molecules that can damage cells and delay tissue repair. Rutin, a natural flavonoid antioxidant, has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Together, these components help reduce tissue damage while supporting the body's natural regenerative processes.
Laboratory experiments showed that the hydrogel is highly biocompatible with both tissues and blood. Once injected into the wound site, it gradually releases its active ingredients, providing sustained antioxidant and antimicrobial effects and promoting faster wound closure compared with untreated wounds.
Another notable feature of the material is its ability to absorb large amounts of fluid—up to ten times its own weight. This helps maintain the moist environment essential for tissue repair while reducing the risk of complications.
The researchers believe the new technology could serve as the basis for future treatments for deep and hard-to-heal wounds. However, additional studies and clinical trials will be required before it can be used in humans.
