Tobacco use remains relatively high in Armenia. According to the latest data, approximately 25.5% of the adult population smoke daily, including around 53% of men and about 2% of women. Mariam Mnatsakanyan, head of the Public Health Department at Armenia’s Ministry of Health, made the remarks at a press conference on October 12.
“The latest survey results show that tobacco use remains relatively high among children, with approximately 25% of boys and 4% of girls smoking. We are now facing new challenges related to e-cigarette use. The prevalence is even higher among children: approximately 36% of boys and 6% of girls have tried e-cigarettes at least once. These figures refer to 15-year-olds.
Children start smoking as early as age 11, although tobacco use is most commonly observed among 13-year-olds, around 5% of whom smoke.
The figures are roughly similar across countries in the European Region, where an average of 33–34% of children use e-cigarettes,” she said.
