Nutritionists told about some unexpected foods that are actually good for health, Fox News reports.

The yam

The sweet potato, the yam, according to scientists, is very healthy. Nutritionist Jared Mecham states that yams contain soluble and insoluble fiber, which helps cleanse the GI tract and maintain healthy microflora. In addition, yams are rich in healthy carbohydrates, vitamins A and C, and manganese.

According to Mecham, the antioxidants in sweet potatoes protect cells from damage and may have anti-cancer effects, especially in colon cells.

Shiitake

Nutritionist Erin Kenney recommends adding shiitake mushrooms to your diet. According to her, this product strengthens the immune system and reduces inflammation in the body. Moreover, there are very few calories in these mushrooms, which is also a big plus.

Spirulina

For patients with type 2 diabetes, Mecham recommended trying spirulina, a blue-green algae called superfood or food of the future. According to the specialist, the product contains many nutrients: 18 amino acids, phytonutrients, copper, iron, manganese, potassium and B vitamins. Spirulina is also rich in protein and helps normalize blood sugar levels.

Experts also included such foods as carrots, green peas, Brussels sprouts, beets, kimchi, garlic and broccoli sprouts in the list of healthy vegetables.
