One in five born after 1980 is single and has no friends and such disappointing data are presented in a study on millennials - people born from 1982 to the 2000s.

A survey conducted by YouGov, a market research and data analysis company, surveyed 1,254 Americans aged 18 and over. It turned out that 27% of millennials have no close friends, 25% have no friends, and 22% have no friends at all.

One third of twenty and thirty-year-old millennials reported feeling lonely often or always. Meanwhile, 49% reported having one to four close friends, and 70% said they had one best friend, while 38% of millennials indicated that they had acquired a new friend in the past six months.

A third of Americans believe that making friends is difficult, with 53% blaming their shyness for this, while 27% say they don’t need friends.

The author of the study, Melissa Hunt noted that reducing the time spent on social networks will lead to a significant reduction in both depression and loneliness.
