Weight gain is a major risk factor for stroke and cancer in a group of people aged 40-59, JAMA Network Open reported referring to a study.According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, even gaining 5 kilos in middle age increases the risk of fatal heart attack or stroke by 26%, said Chinese scientists based on a 20-year study involving approximately 84,000 people. All study participants were thin before middle age. Scientists evaluated the Body Mass Index (BMI). It turned out that weight gain in middle age is deadly and leads to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension, ischemic stroke, fatty liver disease and gallstones. Hormonal disruptions occur, chronic inflammation and insulin resistance develop amid obesity.
According to experts, an increase in weight is a consequence of malnutrition, a sedentary lifestyle, and an age-related slowdown in metabolism.
