Scientists deny link between blood type and risk of contracting COVID-19

Scientists in the United States have denied information that blood type affects the risk of contracting coronavirus.

According to The Daily Mail, experts analyzed data on more than 100,000 patients. They were unable to give an unambiguous explanation of the previously obtained results indicating the effect of a blood group on the risk of contracting coronavirus.

As scientists noted, this could be due to sheer chance, genetic differences, geographic characteristics of the study and other factors distorting the results.

Earlier scientists argued that people with the second blood group are more likely to become infected with the coronavirus. The virus uses the RBD protein complex to bind to host cells, and the strength of its binding affects the ease of infection in humans. Nevertheless, according to scientists, their study does not allow us to understand how the disease will proceed in a patient, but it makes it possible to assess the influence of the blood group factor on this process.
