The course of coronavirus infection has signs similar to Alzheimer's disease, the scientists at Columbia University in the US reported.
According to the journal Alsheimer's and Dementia, the severe course of the coronavirus infection causes defects in specific brain channels. These channels are responsible for the accumulation of protein into neurofibrillary balls.
Scientists examined the brains of people who had died because of COVID-19. They found the same changes in the composition of neurons that are found in Alzheimer's disease. What's more, the scientists also found high levels of amyloid proteins in the brains of those who died, which are characteristic of Alzheimer's disease.
According to the scientists, all this could explain the feeling of 'fog in the head' in those who had coronavirus infection. Scientists believe that COVID-19 may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease in the future.
