Nutritional supplements useless for constipation named

Taking calcium, fiber and iron supplements will not only not get rid of constipation, but may make it worse. British pharmacologist Ashley Dwyer and nutritionist Ryan Geiger told EatingWell.

According to experts, the additional intake of calcium slows down the motor activity of the intestine and the speed of movement of food through the gastrointestinal tract, which does not contribute to the timely removal of fecal masses. Calcium can also cause stools to become dry and hard, complicating defecation problems. Iron supplements also often cause constipation.  Before starting them, Dwyer advised to “prepare” the body by including more foods rich in iron and vitamin C (seaweed, meat, legumes, fruits and vegetables) in the diet.

“Fiber supplements can very much increase stool volume, which also causes constipation. This is especially true for supplements high in insoluble fiber,” Dr. Geiger added.

The doctor added that regular intake of vitamin D in the form of capsules and liquids in high doses can lead to digestive problems. Excess vitamin D can also increase the amount of circulating calcium in the blood, which will only worsen the condition. Experts have also warned against abusing supplements made from senna, a plant that has a natural laxative effect.
