Nature: Aging Accelerates Sharply Around Age 50

Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences have discovered that aging in the human body does not occur uniformly. Instead, there is a critical turning point around the age of 50, after which wear-and-tear processes accelerate significantly. The findings were published in the journal Nature.

The researchers came to this conclusion after analyzing eight physiological systems in 76 individuals aged 14 to 68. They identified abrupt biological changes occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. The cardiovascular system—particularly the aorta, the body's main artery responsible for supplying blood to internal organs—was most notably affected.

According to the authors, aging unfolds not as a gradual decline, but in waves, marked by periods of rapid biological shifts. They also suggest that blood vessels may play a key role in spreading substances that trigger aging throughout the body.

The researchers hope that further study of these so-called “biological shift points” will deepen understanding of age-related deterioration and potentially lead to ways of slowing it down.
