Unexpected Causes of Body Odor: Dermatologist’s Insight

Unpleasant body odor isn't always the result of poor hygiene — it can also be triggered by less obvious factors, according to dermatologist Otávio Macedo in an interview with Veja.

He explained that stress and strong emotions, particularly anxiety, can stimulate sweat glands — especially apocrine glands, which are responsible for producing sweat with a stronger odor.

Certain foods and drinks can also intensify body odor. Garlic, onions, curry, alcoholic beverages, and ultra-processed foods may alter the smell of sweat. To reduce their impact, Macedo recommends maintaining a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water.

Synthetic clothing is another contributing factor, as it traps sweat and promotes bacterial growth. The dermatologist advises wearing natural fabrics like cotton and linen instead.

Previously, neurologist Polina Lepilova recommended iontophoresis as an effective method for managing excessive sweating.
