Drinking wine in small doses does not have a positive effect on health, despite the antioxidants contained in the drink. Spanish cardiologist Magdalena Perelló spoke about this in an interview with El Español.
According to the specialist, the belief that a glass of wine is good for the heart is not supported by scientific data. The doctor noted that any alcohol has a negative effect on the cardiovascular system: it increases the risk of arrhythmia, heart failure, and causes pathological enlargement of the heart chambers. The doctor noted that the harm from wine is comparable to the effects of ultra-processed foods, added sugar, and trans fats.
The expert added that some people justify alcohol consumption because of its antioxidant content.
Antioxidants are substances that protect cells from damage caused by oxidative stress. They are indeed found in grapes, from which wine is made, but ethanol itself does more harm than good to the heart.
Perello emphasized that antioxidants can be obtained from more beneficial components of the Mediterranean diet — vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and olive oil. According to the doctor, such a diet reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke by about 30% and supports the cardiovascular system without alcohol.
