Around 200,000 cancer cases in Germany could have been prevented through lifestyle changes, according to a study by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). This represents about 40% of all cancer cases in the country. Experts shared their recommendations as part of Cancer Prevention Week, which runs until September 8, reports *Tagesschau*.
The main modifiable risk factor is smoking. When it comes to diet, alcohol takes the top spot — it increases the risks for liver and esophageal cancer. The likelihood of developing cancer also rises with a higher body mass index, while high-calorie diets and obesity contribute to chronic inflammation.
Scientists classify processed meat — preserved through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other treatments — as “carcinogenic.” This includes sausages, ham, cold cuts, canned meat, and ready-to-eat meat products.
But are there “protective” foods? Researchers believe that simply “a varied diet rich in plant-based products,” combined with physical activity, can reduce cancer risk. Green tea may also help lower the risk of certain types of cancer.
“Eat whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits regularly; consume high-calorie foods and processed meat only occasionally. Avoid sugary drinks, and drink little alcohol — and not every day,” the scientists summarize.
