Why do joints hurt in bad weather? Researchers have been searching for the answer to this question for many years, but so far the causes of this phenomenon have not been fully determined. Earlier studies have shown that fluctuations in air pressure, humidity, and wind speed can cause increased pain in some people, Discover magazine reports.
Data indicate that in cold or humid weather, joint pain may be caused by changes in barometric pressure, Focus reports. In other words, it is the change in atmospheric pressure on the Earth's surface.
When it is cold in a region, a decrease in barometric pressure can be observed. This causes the cold air to descend, pushing the warm air upward. The “displaced” warm air then cools and condenses, forming clouds, which leads to stormy weather and a sharp drop in temperature.
Thus, during cold weather, the pressure on our bodies decreases. According to scientists, this factor is associated with joint pain. The reason is that insufficient compression in the joints can lead to the expansion of muscles, tendons, and other tissues. Pressure and cold fluctuations can also change the composition of synovial fluid, which acts as a cushioning liquid in the joints, reducing friction between them.
In addition, people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia may be more prone to decreases in barometric pressure.
Researchers have also found that phantom pains increase along with elevated stress levels. This may indicate that changes in atmospheric pressure affect stress levels in some people, potentially intensifying pain.
Cold weather can cause stiffness and discomfort in people who already have injuries, including fractures, sprains, tendon tears, and even muscle strains. Pain sensations may be related to tissue swelling, narrowing of blood vessels, or muscle tension that puts pressure on nerves.
Low temperatures are not the only weather change that causes joint pain. Studies have shown that high humidity aggravates a range of health problems, from arthritis to migraines.
