The Biak Bat Association in Alsasua, northern Spain, incorporates cats into psychosocial and educational therapy for individuals with autism, anxiety disorders, and other mental health or developmental challenges, according to Nerea, a staff member at the center, who spoke to RIA Novosti.
“Cats help develop emotional regulation, boost self-esteem, manage anger, improve social skills, and foster secure attachments. We work with different cats, each with unique abilities and temperaments,” the therapist explained.
She noted that cats can be particularly beneficial in therapy due to their calm and unobtrusive behavior. The center offers various activities: patients care for the animals, play with them, and perform exercises aimed at improving focus, self-control, and confidence.
According to the therapist, these sessions help individuals cope with stress, control impulses, and form stable emotional connections.
While animal-assisted therapy traditionally involves dogs, Biak Bat believes cats can be effective for other patient groups. Their more independent and predictable behavior creates a relaxed environment during sessions.
The center’s programs cater to diverse groups—from children with autism or hyperactivity to adults dealing with anxiety, stress, or difficult life circumstances. Specialists also conduct outreach sessions in nursing homes.
Founded in 2011 in Alsasua by educators Iosu Mendes and Josune Aspiros, Biak Bat focuses on animal-assisted therapy. The center later opened a dedicated space for its programs. Staff note that such practices remain rare in Spain and require further study.
