The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for greater international support to fight an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), warning that the response is still failing to keep pace with the spread of the disease.
“Unfortunately, the outbreak is still expanding beyond the capacity of the current response system. We need additional support not only financially but also in other areas to strengthen every component of the response: increasing the capacity of treatment centers, field epidemiological investigation teams, safe burial teams, and community engagement staff,” WHO spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic said, according to Euronews.
He said response efforts should focus on areas where the virus is currently spreading, as well as locations where it could spread in the future.
Ebola is a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted through close contact with infected people and their bodily fluids.
