Japanese apricot may help fight Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that causes stomach inflammation and increases the risk of cancer. Chinese researchers reached this conclusion after discovering antibacterial properties in an extract of the fruit. The findings were published in the journal Food & Function (F&F).
The researchers examined extracts from 17 edible plants to identify natural substances capable of suppressing Helicobacter pylori. Japanese apricot, also known as ume, proved to be the most promising candidate. The researchers found that its extract inhibited bacterial growth, including that of strains resistant to several antibiotics. It also reduced the activity of genes that enable the bacterium to damage stomach cells.
In experiments on mice, the extract reduced inflammation and promoted the restoration of the stomach lining. Tests on human cells also confirmed its protective properties.
The scientists found that organic acids present in the fruit may play an important role. These compounds interact with the CagA protein, which helps the bacterium damage cells and is associated with an increased risk of stomach cancer.
The authors believe that Japanese apricot could provide a basis for developing additional treatments against Helicobacter pylori. However, there is currently no evidence that eating the fruit itself helps people eliminate the infection.
