Flicking between smartphone and gadgets is dangerous for brain

Flicking between your smartphone, computer and TV can lower your IQ and can have the same effect as being high on drugs, scientists warn.

Using several gadgets at the same time releases the dopamine hormone, which has the same effect on your thoughts as being high, researchers at the University of Copenhagen have found.

Multi-tasking between your smartphone and watching TV is also training your brain to be disorganised, they say.

Information taken in by the brain while flicking through gadgets is stored in the striatum, the region involved in planning movements and motivation.

But focussing on one task at a time and taking in information properly will store the data in the 'library of the brain,' the hippocampus, making the data easier to recall.

"Use of technology in our everyday lives is damaging the brain, causing it to rewire itself and lowering our IQ as a result," said the researchers, who dertook the study with the marketing agency HeyHuman. "Our brains could, thanks to our reliance and overuse of technology, be heading for the scrap heap."
