Man reveals horrific flesh-eating infection he caught in the gym

A man has shared horrific photos of his foot after he caught a flesh-eating infection from his gym.

The keen gym bunny walked barefoot after working out and caught warts which later developed into open wounds.

With such an intense infection, the Texas-based man tried everything to get rid of the infection – including a skin graft using fish scales.

Wishing to remain anonymous, the man wrote into a radio station to share his experiences.

He said that while training for a marathon he used to do a work-out during his lunch hours.

‘There were a few occasions where I left out my flip flops that I would use when I showered, but not wanting to go back to work sweaty and smelly I made the decision to shower barefoot,’ he told The Rod Ryan Show on KTBZ-FM The Buzz.

After spotting an itchy hard part of his foot he was told he had HPV and the wart was a ‘planter’.

But the man chose not to stop training and instead tried duct tape, banana peels, vinegar and over-the-counter acids to shift the wart.

His doctor was unable to help with a cantharidin treatment and soon his foot had five warts.

He endured months of pain, with 2cm warts remaining on his foot, before turning to surgery in February.

Even though used cod scales to perform the skin graft, he is still unable to walk.

He is now appealing for people to ‘take care of your feet so they can take care of you.’

He explained: ‘Do yourself a favour, wear shoes in any public area where there is water. This virus thrives in those areas.’
