Oral sex linked to reduced risk of MISCARRIAGE, study reveals

Women who perform oral sex may have a lower risk of recurrent miscarriage , a new study has revealed.

Researchers from Leiden University Medical Centre have discovered an unexpected link between oral sex and recurrent miscarriage, in which a woman experiences three or more miscarriages prior to the 20th week of gestation.

In the study, the researchers looked at 97 women who had experienced recurrent miscarriages, as well as 137 women who hadn’t experienced recurrent miscarriages.

Interestingly, questionnaires revealed that the women who hadn’t lost any pregnancies were much more likely to perform oral sex on their partners.

In fact, while 72.9% of these women performed oral sex, just 56.9% of women who had experienced recurrent miscarriages did so.

In their study, published in the Journal of Reproductive Immunology , the researchers led by Dr Tess Meuleman, wrote: “This study suggests a possible protective role of oral sex in the occurrence of recurrent miscarriage in a proportion of the cases.”

While the reason for this link remains unclear, the team suggests that semen might have protective effects towards the foetus.

They added: “Future studies in women with recurrent miscarriage explained by immune abnormalities should reveal whether oral exposure to seminal plasma indeed modifies the maternal immune system, resulting in more live births.”
