Scientists find out which antibiotics lead to heart disease

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease, scientists at the University of British Columbia have found.

According to their study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, antibiotics from this group 2.4 times increase the risk of regurgitation (reverse flow) of blood with aortic or mitral valve insufficiency. A significant risk remains in the first 30 days after the start of the use of fluoroquinolones.

Often they make a choice in favor of precisely these antibiotics, since they have a wide spectrum of action, and are equally effective both when taken orally and intravenously. But, unfortunately, with the vast majority of diseases in which fluoroquinolones are prescribed, they are not needed at all.

The misuse of antibiotics can trigger the development of antibiotic resistance. And now it turned out that these drugs can also lead to serious heart problems. Therefore, doctors are encouraged to take a more responsible attitude to the prescription of drugs from the category of antibiotics.
