COVID-19 attacks not only lungs but other organs as well, scientists claim
Scientists from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf found particles of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the kidneys, heart, liver, and brain of patients. This may explain the wide range of symptoms of COVID-19.
As reported in a study, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, once in the human body, attacks not only the lungs but also other organs.
Microbiologists and forensic experts have analyzed the autopsy results of 27 victims of COVID-19. The highest concentration of viral particles is found in the respiratory system. But traces of SARS-CoV-2 were recorded in the kidneys, heart, liver, brain, and blood.
As the study leader, Professor Tobias Huber noted that specialists should take into account possible damage to other organs in the treatment of patients with coronavirus infection.
According to scientists, the presence of the virus in several organs can explain the wide range of symptoms that appear when infected. This may also explain the extremely high incidence of renal failure in patients with COVID-19.
Following the results, scientists recommend a urine test at the very beginning of the disease to find out if the patient has kidney problems.
