Gastric medicine may be effective against COVID-19, research claims

The low-cost drug that is used today to treat the symptoms of indigestion can be effective in controlling COVID-19 in patients with no need for hospitalization, Gut reported referring to a new study

Researchers report 10 COVID-19 patients who took high doses of famotidine.

The most 'popular' dose was 80 mg three times a day, for an average of 11 days. Patients reported that they tolerated the medicine well, and all of them noted their health improved and the COVID-19 symptoms became less disturbing.

As Lenta.ru reported, doctors rated the severity of the five main signs of the disease - including cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, headache, and loss of taste and smell. Symptoms lasted from 2 to 26 days. The average treatment period was 11 days but ranged from 5 to 21 days.

According to scientists, the study of these cases showed that the drug is well tolerated by the body and improves the well-being of COVID-19 patients who do not need hospitalization.

However, the available data are not enough to claim that famotidine is truly effective against COVID-19: to confirm its effectiveness, it is necessary to conduct clinical studies involving more people.
