COVID-19 and psyche: Number of people with severe depression has increased amid the pandemic

June 9, 2020  23:39

The COVID-19 pandemic and its restrictions have led to an increase in the number of cases of severe depression, according to the poll conducted by specialists from the PFH together with the University of Regensburg, Norway University of Applied Sciences and Carleton University in Ottawa.

According to dw.com, commenting on the results of the study, Youssef Shiban - a professor of clinical psychology at the Private University of Göttingen - noted that people from 18 to 25 were particularly affected.

As the doctor noted, he and his colleagues thought that the proportion of cases of severe depression among the population would not exceed 1%, but it turned out that this figure reaches as much as 5%. And this, according to experts, is a serious problem, because the lack of psychotherapists was felt even before the pandemic.

Moreover, there is reason to believe that the psychological consequences of quarantine measures will be observed for a long time, scientists say.
