COVID-19 asymptomatic patients infect surrounding surfaces, study claims

June 25, 2020  18:16

Both symptomatic and asymptomatic COIVD-19 patients can infect surrounding surfaces, a new study of Chinese specialists published in mSphere reported.

Scientists examined the environment and air in the wards of 13 COVID-19 patients who returned from abroad and were placed in an isolation ward. There were two asymptomatic carriers among them.

Specialists took samples from surfaces and found that 44 of 112 surface samples (39.3%) contained SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus. All air samples were negative.

Researchers say isolating asymptomatic COVID-19 patients at home poses a risk to their family members.

These data also show the importance of handwashing after contact with surfaces.
