Women who smoke are 4 times more likely to have brain aneurysm

Women who smoke are four times more likely to have a brain aneurysm, the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery & Psychiatry reported.

The study also showed that if women not only smoked but also had hypertension, then their risk of aneurysm increased seven times.

The authors studied 545 women aged from 30 to 60 undergoing brain scans at five major teaching and research hospitals in the US and Canada from 2016 to 2018.

And 152 out of 545 women had 185 unruptured brain aneurysms. Among women with aneurysm, there were more heavy smokers than among those who did not have an aneurysm.

This is an observational study, so it is impossible to talk about a causal relationship. However, earlier studies have also been conducted with very similar results and conclusions.

Scientists believe that smoking should be considered as a risk factor for cerebral aneurysms in women aged from 30 to 60.
