What disease can elevated bilirubin indicate?

April 2, 2021  16:17

An increased level of total bilirubin can be one of the symptoms of a dangerous disease - gangrenous appendicitis.

Patients with gangrenous appendicitis usually require emergency surgery. Preoperative diagnosis is important, but not always straightforward.

Japanese scientists have identified preoperative predictors of gangrenous appendicitis, Acute Medicine & Surgery reported.

Scientists studied data from 162 patients who underwent appendectomy between September 2011 and August 2014 after being diagnosed with acute appendicitis.

In 102 patients, gangrenous appendicitis was confirmed. Scientists have found that an increased total bilirubin count, as well as the detection of fat accumulation around the appendix using computed tomography, can predict gangrenous appendicitis with a sensitivity of 98.9%.
