Why Vitamin D is recommended before bariatric surgery

Obese patients should take vitamin D before bariatric surgery, South Korean experts noted.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in obese people before bariatric surgery, Korea Biomed reports. An analysis was conducted of data on nutritional deficiencies in 215 patients undergoing bariatric surgery in 2019.

Scientists believe that obese patients should take certain substances before bariatric surgery. The most essential nutrient for the patients was vitamin D. 80% of people were deficient and 14% of patients had insufficient concentration of this vitamin.

Vitamin D is linked to calcium metabolism and bone density. If weight and muscle mass decreased along with bone density after surgery, the risk of fractures increased, experts warn.

The patients also had a deficiency of vitamin B1 (18.3%), folic acid (14.2%), iron (11.8%) and zinc (7.6%). These four elements are essential nutrients for the body. With their lack, anemia and a decrease in immunity can be noted.
