Why is it undesirable for people who work night shift to drive?

People who work night shifts are three times more likely to have an accident, so they are not advised to drive. Moreover, such people are more at risk of facing a chronic condition known as sleep disturbance during shift work, according to experts from the University of Missouri.

According to The Daily Mail, the scientists have found that people who work, for example, from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am, are at greater risk of developing chronic conditions that affect sleep.

In turn, abnormalities like sleep apnea and insomnia increase the risk of accidents or near-accident incidents by 29% and 33%, respectively. Experts advise people who work night shifts to avoid personal transportation and use public transportation, taxis or ridesharing services.

An analysis of the real facts of road accidents that occurred in six US states (about 2,000 events) also showed that drivers with sleep disorders are less attentive while driving. According to statistics, accidents while drowsy driving occurred mainly between midnight and 6 a.m. or late afternoon, when there were immediate shifts in circadian rhythms.
