Researchers find new drug that suppresses coronavirus
Researchers at the University of Alberta (Canada) have discovered potentially effective drugs against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The results of their new study are published in the European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
To look for viral inhibitors, these researchers used the Canadian Light Source (CLS) synchrotron radiation source. They were able to find inhibitors that target the basic protease Mpro, which breaks down viral proteins and is involved in virus reproduction (multiplication).
It was found out that the GC376, a bisulfite drug—which is converted into a drug inside the body—which used to treat coronavirus in cats, has been shown to effectively suppress the Mpro SARS-CoV-2.
With the help of CLS, researchers have studied the interaction of the drug molecule with the protease at the structural level.
It is not ruled out that this substance may become the basis for the treatment of coronavirus.
