Which foods increase blood pressure?

Consumption of fried and salty foods contributes to increasing the blood pressure. This opinion was expressed by nutritionist, Dr. Elena Solomatina. According to her, first of all salt affects the blood pressure.

"They can be openly salty foods—pickled cucumbers, tomatoes, salted fish—as well as ‘hidden’ salty foods—the same salami, sausage, processed meat, bacon. We do not feel much salt in them, but it is too much," the specialist said in an interview with Moscow 24 television.

When eating fried foods, your blood pressure gradually rises as normal blood flow is disrupted over time. According to the specialist, trans fats destroy the walls of the vessel—the endothelium—as well as blood fractions.

"Cholesterol is in a hurry there. An atherosclerotic bulge forms, which slows down blood flow. The heart has to work intensively, and the body raises the blood pressure to ensure blood flow as it is not enough for vital organs," said Solomatina.

It should also be borne in mind that foods containing preservatives, colorants, and flavorings also affect blood pressure. According to the specialist, when they are used, the formation of free radicals is more intense, and they begin to destroy the vessels.

Foods that contain sugar also increase blood pressure. Solomatina noted that a lot of sugar is added to salami, sausages, as well as any processed, fat-free foods.

"As a result, eating such sweet, glycemic foods can lead to insulin addiction and diabetes, which in turn damage the blood vessels. Atherosclerotic bumps appear, they impede blood flow, and the blood pressure increases," the specialist added.
