What are consequences of smoking during acute respiratory infection?

February 17, 2022  18:53

Smoking will delay recovery in patients with acute respiratory infections and worsen their condition, pulmonologist Irina Beloglazova says.

According to RIA Novosti, acute respiratory viral infections, influenza and coronavirus may cause lung damage, therefore it is important for people who contracted these infections to start treatment immediately and refrain from using tobacco products.

The specialist added that in general smoking cigarettes, pipes and cigars contributes to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer of the bronchopulmonary system.

According to the pulmonologist, modern smoking products can cause serious lung damage, in which people begin to choke and need oxygen. Smoking is especially undesirable with acute respiratory infections, since the infection affects the airways.

"And if we, in addition to the fact that our respiratory tract is stressed in the form of existing and developing inflammation in it, will also inhale harmful substances, then it increases the negative condition, delays recovery, often contributes to the chronicity of processes," said the specialist.
