Why is Omicron spreading so quickly?
Researchers from the Joint Institute for High Temperatures and the Institute of General Physics have discovered why the omicron strain of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus spreads faster than other strains.
According to RIA Novosti with reference to the press service of the organization, the scientists have developed a new computer model of the epidemic to clarify the issue. Differential models used earlier did not take into account the coexistence of two strains in the population, and were based on the hypothesis that those who had already overcome the disease can be reinfected, or that those who have recovered retain long-term immunity. According to experts, most of the models used so far assumed a spontaneous development of the epidemic and reflected all its stages.
The new model shows how the emergence of the new strain has shortened the circulation time of delta, which was inferior in infectivity. As a result, omicron reduces the incidence of delta disease and also accelerates the progression of the epidemic.
