Scientists find bacteria that cause metastatic breast cancer

April 11, 2022  18:46

Chinese scientists have found bacteria that increase the risk of metastatic breast cancer, this is reported in the study, the results of which were described in the journal Cell.

During a study on mice, scientists found not only cancer cells and immunoglobulins themselves, but also foreign microorganisms in the vast majority of tumors. Specialists decided to study their role in cancer development and the emergence of a metastasis in detail.

It turned out that certain types of bacteria (Staphylococcus xylosus, Staphylococcus cuniculi and Lactobacillus animalis) increase the risk of developing metastasis. In addition, introduction of these microbes into the mammary glands of the test subjects directly influenced the rate of cancer development.

The discovered bacteria were also able to integrate into tumors and change genetic structures of cancer cells responsible for the speed of movement and resistance.

In the future, researchers plan to study the mechanism of operation of these microorganisms and develop tactics to prevent the bacteria from entering tumors.
