Russian scientists from the B.N. Yeltsin Ural Federal University have identified a number of chemical combinations that can be used in the treatment of severe pneumonia. These substances, unlike their analogues, do not suppress the immune system.
During the study experts have found a method for the synthesis of new compounds with azoloazino heterocycles in the composition, which can suppress the activity of interleukin-6, which plays an important role in the immune response, the journal Pharmaceuticals writes.
According to scientists, excess interleukin causes uncontrolled inflammation, which leads to tissue destruction and is life-threatening for patients. The new substance helps curb this reaction.
The development will produce new drugs against severe forms of influenza and coronavirus. "Thanks to our initial basic research, a number of drugs have already entered the pharmaceutical market," said Konstantin Savateev, a researcher at the UrFU Laboratory of Organic Synthesis.
The specialists will analyze the research results in order to synthesize new heterocycles with enhanced properties. After that, they plan to submit an application to the Ministry of Health of Russia and organize preclinical studies of the new drugs.
