Why is it important not to remove appendix?

It is advisable not to remove the appendix because it plays an important role in the human immune system, said URA.RU physician of the highest category Alexey Vodovozov.

According to the doctor, on the one hand the appendix is a rudiment but on the other it is an extremely important organ for the immune system, according to comparatively new data. In the area of the appendix there is a huge number of immune plaques and lymphocytes.  The appendix is a kind of training camp, where lymphocytes learn who is friendly and who is alien. In addition, foreign bacteria that enter the body with food pass through the appendix, Vodovozov explained. 

The doctor noted that the appendix can also help restore microflora. 

According to the specialist, at the early stage of inflammation the appendix can be cured by medication. 

In particular, local antibiotic therapy, which is lavage of the cavity with antibiotics, has proven itself well. 

Sometimes you can also get by with just systemic antibiotics, without puncturing the abdominal wall. This method is usually used when treating children. 

At the same time, the doctor reminded about the importance of early diagnosis of inflammation of the appendix. If a patient is brought to the hospital with purulent appendicitis, the organ has to be removed, he added.
