British scientists have developed a rapid test that can detect various genetic diseases in a short time, The Guardian reports.
This is revolutionary for the health care system and genomic medicine, as the test will help quickly diagnose diseases in thousands of critically ill children and save their lives, says the executive director of Britain's National Health Service (NHS).
Until now, such tests have taken several weeks, delaying the start of life-saving treatment. According to Pritchard, this is the only test today that analyzes all 22,000 genes in the human genome and the results are obtained in two days. Doctors will use these tests to detect DNA changes and diagnose even rare genetic disorders.
The research was conducted at the Genomic Medicine Service of the United Kingdom in the county of Devonshire in the southwest of England. Scientists are now continuing developments to reduce the time it takes to get a test result to a few hours.
