Non-sinking feces may be sign of intestinal disease

Stool that has stopped sinking is a serious reason to see a doctor, Scientific Reports reported.

The publication published the conclusion of doctors from the Mayo Clinic, which recommends seeking medical attention in cases where feces are constantly floating in the water when flushed. Intestinal diseases can manifest in this way, the experts believe.

The researchers presented data from observations of mice. The rodents' feces, which had difficulty sinking, were found to contain gas released by a certain type of intestinal bacteria. Its increase along with an increase in their population was associated with higher levels of inflammation in the gut. According to scientists, this conclusion, drawn in an experiment with mice, is quite applicable to the human body as well. If the feces have stopped sinking, it makes sense to examine the intestines, as there may be a deterioration in their condition. In particular, this may indicate a disorder in the breakdown of fats and an increase in their content in the feces.

In healthy people, the experts noted, stool sometimes begins to float stubbornly. This can happen, for example, because of a vegetarian diet or because of the consumption of foods that stimulate gas.
