FBI Director: COVID-19 pandemic was caused by ‘lab incident’ in Wuhan

March 1, 2023  15:04

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan, China. This was announced by FBI Director Christopher Wray in an interview with Fox News.

This is Wray’s first public comments on the FBI's investigation into the lab origins of the coronavirus, CNN noted.

“I will just make the observation that the Chinese government, it seems to me, has been doing its best to try to thwart and obfuscate the work here,” the bureau director said. “The work that our US government and close foreign partners are doing. And that’s unfortunate for everybody.”

Wray's statement was made after a publication of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), where the periodical referred to the report of the US Department of Energy. In it, the department informed that the COVID-19 pandemic had a laboratory origin.

The Department of Energy is the second US federal agency—after the FBI—which now supports the hypothesis of a laboratory leak of the virus, WSJ wrote.

Four more intelligence agencies believe that the virus emerged naturally, and two agencies, including the CIA, are undecided, the newspaper wrote.

Commenting on the aforesaid publication of the newspaper, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning called to stop discrediting Beijing and not to politicize the issue of the origin of the coronavirus.

In October 2021, US intelligence published a report on the study of the origin of the coronavirus. According to it, the intelligence community ruled out the theory that China developed SARS-CoV-2 as a biological weapon, but did not come to a shared opinion about the origin of the virus.
