Research confirms link between snoring and hypertension
Doctors at Flinders University (Australia) conducted a major study that found that people, especially middle-aged and overweight men, who snore regularly are at greater risk of developing high blood pressure and uncontrolled hypertension, reports Planet Today.
The study was published in the Digital Medicine portal. It used multiple overnight family monitoring to examine the relationship between snoring and hypertension.
Snoring is a factor in cardiovascular diseases, regardless of other accompanying conditions. However, most previous research has relied on participants' self-reports. And this study used sensor technology placed under the mattress to objectively assess snoring over several months. A total of 12,287 people participated in the study and were monitored every night for six months. The participants measured their blood pressure with a bracelet several times a day to determine the presence of uncontrolled hypertension.
Uncontrolled hypertension is defined as mean systolic blood pressure ≥140 Hg and/or mean diastolic blood pressure ≥90. The association between snoring and hypertension was examined after adjusting for factors such as age, body mass index, gender, and apnea-hypopnea index (eAHI).
The average age of the participants was 50, and 88 percent of them were men. Uncontrolled hypertension was reported in 2,467 participants (20 percent). About 29 percent of participants snored about 10 percent of their sleep time, 14 percent snored more than 20 percent, and 7 percent snored more than 30 percent of their sleep time.
The results of the study showed that those who snored for more than 12 percent of their sleep time had almost twice the risk of hypertension.
The research emphasized the importance of using simple, objective, and non-invasive methods to identify snoring and its potential negative consequences. These methods can be useful in clinical practice and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
