Cyprus has seen increase in coronavirus cases

July 24, 2024  14:31

An increase in cases of COVID-19 caused by the new coronavirus has been recorded in Cyprus. The spokesperson of the island nation's State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY), Charalambos Charilaou, informed about it on Tuesday.

Charilaou noted that "there is an increase in Covid cases in the general population," and so far 50 people who have tested positive are being treated in Cypriot hospitals. But, according to Charilaou, none of these patients with Covid are in intensive care units, so the current situation does not cause much concern for doctors.

At the same time, OKYPY believes that there is no risk of overloading hospital wards due to the increase in Covid cases.

"As before, now we have several cases of severe pneumonia. We also have people with mild symptoms who have underlying medical conditions and need oxygen, and also people with mild symptoms who cannot take antiviral drugs because they will interact with other drugs they are already taking. So they go to the hospital to get intravenous drug treatment," Charilaou explained.

The OKYPY official added that the island has seen an increase also in cases of gastrointestinal diseases due to the careless consumption of foods that spoil more quickly in the July heat.

Charilaou advised the Cypriot population and visitors to closely monitor the current weather conditions for possible signs of heat exhaustion or sunstroke. The latter has already caused several deaths on the island this summer, during which average June temperatures were the highest on record.
