BMJ Open: Sitting less is essential to prevent back pain, study suggests

October 3, 2024  14:31

Researchers at the University of Turku (Finland) have found that reducing sitting time by 40 minutes a day can prevent back pain. The results of their respective study were published in BMJ Open.

Overweight and obese volunteers who had back pain participated in this study. They were instructed to reduce the amount of time they spent sitting by about 40 minutes.

The researchers explained that in people with back pain, excess fat accumulates in their muscles, and a violation of glucose metabolism or sensitivity to insulin additionally leads to unpleasant sensations.

Six months after the start of this experiment, the volunteers reported a decrease in the intensity and frequency of back pain.

The researchers used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and PET imaging to assess the condition of the back muscles of the volunteers.

Contrary to expectations, the researchers found that improved well-being was not associated with changes in weight or muscle glucose metabolism.

These researchers assumed that the therapeutic effect may be based on other mechanisms. But in order to find them out correctly, it is necessary to conduct additional research.

The authors of the study added that the best solution for maintaining spine health is walking or short exercises.
